Tim Burton’s standout 1988 comedy Beetlejuice is getting a sequel. Fans of the comedy horror film will recall that the story follows a deceased couple Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis) who are unsuccessful in scaring away the Deetz family, Charles Deetz (Jeffrey Jones) and Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara), and Lydia Deetz (Ryder), who has moved into their old home. So the pair decide to get help from a malicious spirit and bio-exorcist, Beetlejuice or Betelgeuse (Keaton).
According to Deadline, Warren Skaaren adapted the film’s plotline from a story by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson. Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B ordered the sequel and has confirmed the return of Michael Keaton as the titular Betelgeuse and Winona Ryder as the now grown-up Lydia.
Beetlejuice 2 – Release Date
No details on production have been revealed so far. If the film actually gets in front of a camera all we can do is take a guess; we might be looking at a 2025 release date.
Beetlejuice 2 – Quick Storyline
The sequel remains in early development so not much has been revealed with regard to plot details. Previously, Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian was the name of a scripted sequel to the 1988 film, but never made it to production and was shelved. The script was written by Jonathan Gems who was certain that the movie would never get made. Back in 1997, he said “You really couldn’t do it now anyway. Winona is too old for the role, and the only way they could make it would be to totally recast it.”
According to Screen Rant the script “followed the Deetz family as they moved to Hawaii to develop a vacation resort. As construction begins, it’s quickly found that the resort is being planned atop an ancient burial ground. Enter Beetlejuice, who would accidentally awake native spirits and cause mayhem.” It’s likely the upcoming sequel might not fall back on the previous script.
Beetlejuice 2 – Cast & Characters
For now, the Oscar-nominated actor Keaton and Ryder are said to be on board but there have been rumors of Johnny Depp joining the cast. The buzz of his casting was first reported by Giant Freakin Robot nearly two years ago. “Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have a longstanding and (mostly) successful relationship when it comes to movies,” the site noted. “This shared history might be one reason the director is willing to consider Depp in an upcoming film in spite of the latter’s recent woes. Through the years they’ve worked together on a total of eight films.” Depp and his ex Ryder starred in Burtons’s 1990 film Edward Scissorhands. Depp and Burton have also worked on Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows.
